Lucent Agere PCI 56K modem and SUSE 10
 

Hi,
I have a Lucent Agere 56K V.92 modem. I have tried it under SUSE 10 a while ago but could never get it working, and unfortunately without internet support linux was pretty much useless to me, so I left it for a while. I posted a question ages ago and I recall someone saying the winmodem drivers aren't provided in SUSE 10, as they aren't open source now and you have to buy them now or something. In the last few days I've been looking for a PCI modem which is fully controller-based and it will probably cost me about $50 off ebay. Suddently it all clicked, if I could pay for the drivers it would be cheaper than a new modem.
Last time I had suse 10 installed I downloaded the latest ltmodem drivers which had to be compiled from scratch, and I am not a linux expert. I kept getting errors which couldn't be resolved, so I just gave up eventually.

Basically does anyone know how I can get this agere winmodem working with suse 10, if there are official drivers where can I buy them, and how much do they cost.

I don't want an external modem because they are bulky, use a power outlet and don't even really seem to be as quick as my winmodem. On the other hand hardware based PCI modems which don't require any specific drivers are very expensive and hard to obtain.

Any suggestions?

I don't really understand what the smartlink drivers are about, I went to the download page and it didn't mention that lucent winmodems were supported, so how is the driver compatible?

I checked the model of my modem and it's a Netcomm IN5699, not sure if this makes any difference.

I feel your pain. Internal winmodems are nothing but a disaster in Linux. Either they don't work, or greedy people want you to pay them for a driver for a modem you already own. The best option, of course, is to ditch dial-up all together if you want to use Linux (in my short experience with it). I am sitting here running a swift 14.4k because I refuse to pay Linuxant.com $20 for the full version of my driver. I will just hold out a couple of months until I can afford a cable connection.

Anyway, I googled and came up with the following site that has Linux drivers for all "Lucent/Netcomm" modems. hopefully the link to the file isn't outdated: http://www.modem-drivers.com/drivers/34/34635.htm

I found that link almost instantly using google. I think that if you try searching for your laptop model and/or the modem model, you'll find a suitable answer from someone who has configured linux with the same setup.

It's not a laptop. Problem is I've downloaded the drivers before and I can't compile them.
I'm going to give up anyway because I tried SUSE 10 and it used to work, but since I've gotten an IBM P275 CRT monitor, and SUSE didn't seem to like it. I can't go past resolutions of 1024x768 and 16bit colour depth. If I try to the screen goes corrupt.
Also my logitech G5 doesn't work either. No mouse pointer appears on the screen when I get into KDE.

I might just stick with windows, It may not be perfect but at least it works.
