Lost sound and laptop trackpad after ubuntu upgrade

Hi

Everything was working when I was on Ubuntu 9.04 but after I upgraded to 9.10 via their upgrade utility. The upgrade failed at the last point of installation (when it tried to install daemon I think). Nevertheless, after the reboot I was on ubuntu 9.10. But the sound stopped working as well as the mouse trackpad on my laptop. I remember that during the installation when it asked if I wanted to keep the old sound configuration file, I clicked yes. So is there I way to fix/reinstall the sound driver and the tackpad? In the sound hardware setting window, no device is listed. I'm pretty sure that my hardwares work on ubuntu 9.10 as the sound and trackpad work fine using the ubuntu 9.10 live CD.

I had the same problem, except it was incredibly slow too, only using one CPU and incredibly laggily at that. I gave up and installed fedora. Much better :)

A clean install should fix those problems however. I can run 9.10 perfectly from a USB stick.

ya of course reinstalling would fix the problems.
But I was wondering if there's a way to fix them without using that last solution

I installed Xubuntu 9.10 and it ran everything fine but slow , then i updated and now i have no mouse and probably no sound although I haven't checked that yet. A fresh install might work but only if I do not do the update so that's not a good answer. looks like a bug to me..??
Hardware is dell5000 no other OS just Xubuntu 9.10 from CD alt .
Any ideas please. I'd like to not go thru multiple installs as it takes a long time. Thank you.

no mouse continued

PS IT doesn't work with an external mouse either. Keyboard is fine and display OK too can navigate using Fn + numpad .
Thanks for help.
