check if BIOS can "see" your cd-rw drive (BIOS setup)

power ok ? (can you eject tray)
IDE cabling ok ? (did you change anything)
drive disabled in BIOS ?

AltF4,
yes, the bios sees both my sony crx22 and my nec dvd rw
redhat worked when first installed, and the only updates have been from the update site ( the new kernal etc.)
when kudzu runs at startup, the line following "checking for new hardware" says
[ updating /etc/fstab can not stat /dev/cdrom1: no such file or directory ]

but in the very begining of the boot process, both of my cd drives are listed by name and model

have you, by any small chance, changed your cd-rom drive device to scsi emulation?

if so, the device won't be /dev/cdrom - more likely /dev/scd0 or similar..

also, what does your /etc/fstab file contain?

are you using lilo or grub bootloaders - depending on which one, what does the config file say - particularly with respect to ide-scsi emulation?

check the output of "dmesg" for any references to your cdrom/cdrw

kevinatkins,
it looks like I did change to scsi emulation without knowing it, I wouldn't know how. How can I tell which Im using.............grub or lilo? How can I find and print the config file? And fstab says this"
LABEL=/ / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner,kudzu 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 udf,iso9660 noauto,owner,kudzu,ro 0 0

AltF4,
I found this in my dmseg print out that relates to the cd-rw scsi emulation.

SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00
hdc: attached ide-scsi driver.
hdd: attached ide-scsi driver.
scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices

Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

Vendor: _NEC Model: DVD+RW ND-1000A Rev: 1.01
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Starting timer : 0 0
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [PCSPP,TRISTATE]
parport0: Printer, HEWLETT-PACKARD DESKJET 895C
Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Attached scsi CD-ROM sr1 at scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 210x/52x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12
sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray

What can I do armed with this knowledge? Can it be fixed or can I force the system to recognize my drives?

thanks,
eatin' humble pie

You can try this since it worked for me.

As root

cd /dev
rm cdrom
ln -s /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom
chmod 755 <- not sure if this is exactly right, not too good with permissions but it allows users access to it also. Probably an easier way.

You may have to try scd1 or scd0 depending on where it is detected.
