So my sister killed her memory stick. Doh, but perhaps not the end of the world I think... Here's the situation:

but I can't see it in Testdisk or Photorec as sda. Before I give up I wondered whether anyone had any other ideas, or is it completely shot? When the device is plugged into Windoze it's mounted but with a different drive name to normal and it shows as a blank device. I can't mount it at all in Ubuntu.
