Lost data on USB Memory Stick

So my sister killed her memory stick. Doh, but perhaps not the end of the world I think... Here's the situation:

The memory stick get's picked up by the kernel:
dmesg:
Code:
[ 3614.208000] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 13
[ 3614.352000] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 3614.356000] scsi3 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
[ 3614.356000] usb-storage: device found at 13
[ 3614.356000] usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
[ 3619.356000] usb-storage: device scan complete
[ 3619.360000] scsi 3:0:0:0: Direct-Access USBest USB2FlashStorage 0.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
[ 3619.368000] sd 3:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI removable disk
[ 3619.368000] sd 3:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg0 type 0
lsusb
Code:
Bus 001 Device 013: ID 1307:0163
but I can't see it in Testdisk or Photorec as sda. Before I give up I wondered whether anyone had any other ideas, or is it completely shot? When the device is plugged into Windoze it's mounted but with a different drive name to normal and it shows as a blank device. I can't mount it at all in Ubuntu.

The data is gone and so is the partition table (no sda1), format the USB memory stick FAT32 should work.
