Looking for NAS Device

Hi,

I am looking for a NAS device to connect to Ubuntu Linux and am ideally looking for a device to do the following if anyone knows of anything.

Must Have
Linux Compatible
Ext3 and/or NFS support
Reasonable Read/Write Speed

Nice to have
FTP access to be able to access files from internet
USB access to PC (if the device is slow or I need to copy large files to device I can connect directly then)

I am looking at either a NAS Device, a NAS without HD (I have one I can fit) or a device that can connect a usb drive to a network

I have seen some things about the Linksys NSLU2 which enables you to use a usb drive on a network, but the reviews I have seen have commented that the access speed is very slow for read/write.

Does anyone know of a device that can do this.

Thanks,

Gavin,

Personally, I've got an old box loaded with "FreeNAS" which does all of the above and more - assuming you have a PC available to use, it's great. Even runs off a USB key :D

If you look at the review of Nas stuff on tomshardware you will see that making you own NAS (out of an old machine) is usually faster and cheap than the vast majority of off the shelf devices. It also has the advantage that you can expand and update as you need. The biggest thing I would suggest is to go GigE right from the start. After that just make sure you have fast drives. If you need more speed later you can add a hardware Raid card and multiple drives. You would be amazed how handy a fast server is and how fast you can build up to a Tb of storage.

Hi,

'FreeNAS' has been recommended and I just want to provide you with the link. You can construct a NAS unit from a older system that you may have laying around.

This link and others are available from 'Slackware-Links'
