Use google when you need stuff :)

"Fully Cross Platform Compliant Mac - PC - Linux."
http://www.barcodereaders.com/Phoenix/lowcost.html

also may want to look at

http://slashdot.org/features/00/09/01/149223.shtml

Good luck,

A modern USB scanner acts like a keyboard, read the page at the 1st link above. It's basic function -- inserting the barcode at the text cursor -- is OS independent & needs no driver.
Quote:

This barcode scanner pretends it is another keyboard eliminating the need for extra boxes or software, everything is built into the scanner itself.
OTOH, the supplied s/w has to have the right OS:

Free Software Included
. . .
Works on Mac OS 7 - 9.2 and also on Mac OSX.
Works on PC Windows all versions including 2000 and XP.
Note, Linux is not mentioned in the list of OS's the "Free Software Included" works w/.

We just bought a scanner (different mfr.) for our computer club, & one of its features is a manual that contains codes that program the scanner when it reads them -- no computer or OS needed.

Phoenix II and Datalogic Touch

I have called Penisula Group and asked for a clarification about the product description regarding Linux support. Here is what they replied:

The USB Phoenix II barcode reader works as a standard keyboard interface, so as long as your keyboard works correctly then you will have no problem.
I have taken another low-cost barcode scanner myself though, which also works out of the box without any additional software or kernel module: Datalogic Touch 90 Pro, a multi-interface scanner, using it with a USB cable

Similarly, as described in the previous post this barcode scanner also has printed barcodes in the shipped documentation which you simply scan to configure the scanner. This documentation is also online on the Datalogic product website if you want to see how this looks like.

I use the Datalogic Touch 90 Pro scanner on about 250 customer sites and it works perfectly. No drivers required. USB connection. Plug and go. Configuration of the scanner is easy with the included configuration sheet.

If you have more money to spend I recommend the Worth Data LZ310-WDP. Sturdier, and easier to use.

Normally Linux comes with basic drivers that compatible with most hardware.I found some useful instructions from here.It worked with my CyperLab 1000 barcode scanner.

Barcode reader not working under Debian

The link in Kavinga's post is obsolete.
I have been trying for a week to get pos-x barcode scanner to talk to Debian. No luck so far, it either fails with generic-usb: probe of 0003:0483:5800.000B failed with error -62, when programmed as USB, or it makes all the appropriate noises but does not scan anything when programmed as keyboard. Either way it never shows up in lsusb. It works fine under Windows 8 on the same laptop, so it is a Debian issue. Haven't tried it with a live CD yet

Kind of time for a new thread on this.

Well, what scanner do you have exactly? Does it have any factory linux or qnx support? If the device was recent and it has Windows 8 support, it may be that linux support will come in time.

MartyJay, Please do not reply to dead threads especially since you already have a thread on the same subject.
