Can anyone recommend a good guide for dealing with various hardware. Basically I am trying to learn what steps/processes I need to go through to be able to configure new equipment as and when I get it.

I know about HotPlug and Kuzu - when this work they have saved me a great deal of hassle but you do not learn much from them. Things like device addresses, drivers, kernel modules and other configurations -

If anyone knows of a good general resource or primer for understanding the basics if this that would be great --- The GUIs which supposedly do this for you teach you nothing and usually mess up prior configurations.

If you are interested in learning more about Linux and prefer a hands on approach I highly recommend giving Slackware a try. It will give you a great understanding of Linux no matter what the distributions. I used RH for a month and didn't learn anything.
