The first, last and only name in ATA hardware raid. The driver is in the kernel, the card stores state so it is true hardware raid, not like those abysmal Promise and Highpoint cards where all the work is done in driver. And all of the hardware adaptec cards have pseudo/worthless proprietary drivers, aside from those covered by aacraid.o, but they're pretty worthless too.
This is of course assuming ATA, for SCSI it becomes a whole new price-ballpark, but the LSI megaraid cards are bar-none bulletproof, albeit $300 at least.
Just a quick note, if you plan on using a 2.6.x kernel with RAID, don't since the last time I checked the 2.6 kernel does not support hardware RAID only software RAID.
The ataraid driver series has been dropped, those at the end of IDE section that create device nodes on /dev/ataraid/dXpX, but the few ATA/SATA drivers in the SCSI section which were more robust are all still there, the 3ware one being at the top.
Nope, I would assume we have at least... maybe 100 of these on the job, and the only slightest annoyance I've gotten from one of them is that it sometimes takes a few tries to get one to clear its settings when you want to build an entirely new array. Almost all of them we've got out there are running the / partition of their OS installs.
Its a pretty unstoppable card. I've heard bad news about older versions, but I've never seen boot hangs, and we had to cold boot a lot of machines recently.
If your looking for a raid 0 card, you can get the same quality of card for less with. a LSI20320 or a
LSI22320. The megaraid is a bit overkill if you just want to boot off of like two mirrored scsi disks.
I would recomend the LSI22320 (dual chanell) with IE firmware. Like the megaraid, it has a onboard bios that you can build volumes in.
the most cost efective "good" scsi "hardware raid card" would be the LSI20320 with IE , IM, or IS firmware. You can pick one up for around 100 to 130
The HBA and the MegaRAID are both build of the same chips, and for 320 scsi, adaptec has nothing on them
As for a hand at boot, its probibly a driver / kernel confict, i would check the version of driver and upgrade if posible,
you can do this using cat /proc/mpt/version i think this will work for the megaraid anyways

Very nice, thank you.... I've heard great things about this brand... it seems everybody thinks they're excellent... thx!
