Log message (hard drive related)

I keep getting the following message

Code:
Buffer I/O error on device hda, logical block 285532
hda: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: command error: error=0x51 { IllegalLengthIndication LastFailedSense=0x05 }
hda: possibly failed opcode: 0xa0
end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 1142128
But searching on the internet does not show threads containing solution.

What goes wrong for that message? Or where might have the related resource talking about such issue? Is it hard drive block corrupted?

env: debian unstable, kernel 2.6.32.8, gcc 4.4.4

Thanks for help.

It looks like a problem reading a sector on the hard drive.

If you have the smart daemon running, type "smartctl -a /dev/hda".

If not, install and run the smart daemon. It will give you
more information about the drive. Basically if you only have
a few bad blocks, it will mark them as bad and all will be well.
If it finds a lot of errors, it's time to replace the drive.

Thanks. The information is very useful.

I download and install using

Code:
aptitude install smartmontools
The result shows
Code:
=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED

...
Accroding to [1], this seems to indicate the drive is ok. Thanks again for your help.
