localhost:631 password refused at end of printer set up

I am trying to get my samba printer up and running. It is connected through samba. Everything goes fine until the end when I need to enter user name and password. I have tried both root and user name and both fail. The system I am running is Sidux 2007 (pure sid debian), CUPS 1.2.11-2, KDE 3.5.5 kernel 2.6.21. The difficulty is that it is a Brother MFC-240 whose ppd file the KDE kprinter setup apt doesn't like something about its header. I have used localhost:631 before to set up the same printer and had no trouble. (Reason I have to redo things is that I ran into samba trouble with something I did and had to redo setup on the printer once things got corrected.)

I seem to have the same problem with Cups admin and setting up printers. Yet, I have no problem printing. I used OpenOffice.org spadmin to define my printers (one printer; several definitions for different printing tasks). Cups sees those as valid printers; I just can't administer them from localhost:631.

You might want to try
Code:
lppasswd g sys a root
which sets a new password for root...

Been there done it. In am using Sidux which is a pure debian distro that uses primarily KDE (I am using 3.5.5). For some reason CUPS is supposed pick up the password from the regular logon therefore lppasswd is having no effect. Now of course there could be the case (I am a pack rat when it comes to apts) that I have an apt that is interfering with the password introduction. I am running through samba so that does might complicate the issues.

Does the Brother MFC-240 print, then, or doesn't it? If the ppd is faulty, did you get it from http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/index.html ?
