loading ohci-hcd causes machine check exeption

when I load the ohci-mcd (usb) module I get the following message in the kernel log:
Code:
ohci_hcd: 2004 Nov 08 USB 1.1 'Open' Host Controller (OHCI) Driver (PCI)
PCI: Enabling device 0000:00:03.0 (0000 -> 0002)
ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKE] enabled at IRQ 11
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:03.0[A] -> Link [LNKE] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:03.0 to 64
ohci_hcd 0000:00:03.0: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller
CPU 0: Machine Check Exception: 0000000000000007
Bank 3: b400000000000833 at 000000001e000004
Kernel panic - not syncing: Unable to continue
I am running gentoo with kernel 2.6.13 and dual-boot into windows xp.

the usb ports work great in windows, so I don't think it is a hardware problem.

any suggestions?
