little fib to xorg.conf

Hi,

I was wondering how dangerous it would be to change my horizontal sync
from 30-71 KHz to 30-81 KHz so I can get a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 75Hz. Will this be signing a death warrent for my monitor?

If anyone has any advice for me it would be appreciated, or better yet if anyone has ever ruined their monitor by doing this please let me know so i can learn from your mistakes and not mine

Thanks

If your monitor is not rated for75Hz then one of two things can happen.

1. Your monitor will report "frequency out of range" and not display anything. Then you need to boot from CD and fix the configuration file.

2. Your monitor will try to run at the specified frequency. It will overheat. Have your credit card handy and make sure you have the window open and can reach the plug easily.

Have you checked your monitor specs? A max of 71Hz seems somewhat low. The 5 yr old monitor I'm sitting in front of is running at 85Hz.

Well I have tried it and it does work, however I am quite sure that it is only rated for a horizontal sync of 30-71KHz and a vertical refresh of 50-160Hz. So hey, God hates a coward right? I'll just leave it and see if I end up with a new paperweight and an excuse to buy a shiny new monitor.

Also a sync of 30-71khz dosn't mean that the max refresh rate is 71hz, it depends on what resolution your using...I can get 85hz on 1024x768

Glad it worked. However the fact that you GOT 75Hz doesn't mean that you have "got away" with it. Essentially you are overclocking the monitor. Good Luck!

I believe you are mis-understanding the way it is calculated the 85hz is the rate it can be refreshed from top to bottom so therefore vertical refresh. Anyways in future you should just look into your /var/log/XFree86.0.log or Xorg.0.log and there should be a list of the rates your monitor will support and sometimes the actual refresh rates for the horizontal and vertical you should use to put in your config file. That is if your monitor supports ddc and you are loading that module in the config file.
