Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Lirc vs. Lircd

One thing I can't get clear from all the tutorials regarding Lirc out there is, what software do I need? If I use the daemon lircd can I skip compiling support for Lirc in the kernel? It seems that installing Lirc from source (from eg. http://www.lirc.org) would require the kernel sources (which I of course have), but what will it build? A kernel module? Only the daemon? Then, what about the Lirc section in the 2.6 kernel?

Hope someone can clear this up!/Cheers

the kernel modules enable the hardware support for the device, whilst the daemon listens to that device and acts upon the data it sees on it, so you really want both.

OK, thanks. The source code I download from Lirc.org (or wherever), does it just contain the daemon?
