Linux won't recognize new 500GB Seagate second hard drive

I recently installed Debian Etch on a new computer. The computer has two SATA hard drives, and 80 GB which it recognizes and I was able to partition and install Debian on, and a 500 GB seagate, which the BIOS clearly recognizes, but Linux will not acknowledge.

I had read that SATA 3Gb/s sometimes has problems, so I switched the jumpers to 1.5 Gb/s, but still was unable to see the drive.

Has anybody else encountered this, and found a solution?

Thanks!

How did you determine that the drive isn't recognized?

I initially tried gparted, but it only listed /dev/sda as the available drives, which is my 80GB. I've also tried fdisk -l, which only lists /dev/sda. Also, when installing Debian, I chose manual partitioning, and the only device it showed was the 80.

Is there something else I need to do?

Also, for what its worth, this is on an Asus M2N-X motherboard, using the onboard SATA controller.

OK... go through BIOS again and make sure the drive is enabled.
(I have just come from a long thread where it turned out that each controller position could be selectively enabled/disabled.)
Also try a live CD.

Are both drives in SATA?

Ok...sorry for the delayed answer here, but I didn't have a chance to work on this til just now.

I first went through the bios, and checked the settings between the first drive (80GB, working) and the second drive (500GB, not working.) They are identical.

Next, I booted the livecd Gentoo 2006.1, and found the same problem, no second hard drive. After that, I found that I didn't have another live cd, so i downloaded the latest Fedora Core 7 install.

I let the install begin, and got to the partitioning section, and it was able to see the second hard drive. After some further research, I found that Debian Etch runs the 2.6.18 kernel, which has some issues with some SATA drives. After finding that, I am now working to compile the stock 2.6.21.5 kernel, following the directions at http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_com...on_debian_etch . I'll post if this works or not, and if anybody has other directions for compiling a kernel that might be better, I'm all ears.

If this doesn't work, I might have to switch distros and just use Fedora, since it detected the drive, no problem. Thanks for the advice so far!!!

Oh well done... yeah - kernel was next on the list.
Debian tends to run an older kernel, but I am surprised you cannot use apt to install a later one (even if not the latest). This is why we tend to suggest sid (unstable) or lenny (testing) rather than etch (stable) for the home desktop.

You can also just select low-dependency packages from the unstable branch.
