Linux won't install with USB keyboard

I am a new linux user and I'm putting SuSE Linux 9.1 Personal on one of my old Pentium II computers. The ps/2 keyboard and mouse port does not work on this computer so i've been using a usb keyboard and serial mouse. The keyboard works fine in the bios and when the first linux install screen comes on. However, when it starts installing it says "activating usb devices" and then the keyboard stops responding (i.e. the numlock/capslock/scroll lock lights don't light up when you press those keys" and shortly after and the installation freezes. If anyone has any answers to how to get through this I'd be very grateful. If possible write to this forum or email me yoshu5@aol.com.

are the usb ports on the motherboard? or on a pci card? that may be a factor. have you looked for a usb keyboard seeting in the bios? legacy connections?

the usb ports are on the motherboard and i will look up the settings in the bios i'm not used to using usb keyboards/mouses and i really don't get why the keyboard works in the bios but stops working halfway through the linux installation. I will check that out though thanks.
