Linux Remote Control!

Hello! I want to add some remote control functionality to my linux computer. This will make my movie watching easier!

So do you know any remote control that is compatible
a) with latest linux distros but as well
b) with windows (for my woman's computer) and
c) could be easily ordered from amazon,play.com and other famous e-shops.

I would like to thank you in advance for your help

Best Media Centre Software Ever.

Remote that presents as MCE keyboard and mouse and works perfectly with Linux and XBMC.

I didn't get what is the first link about? Do i need special software for a remote control to work?

What do you mean by MCE keyboard? So my linux will recognize two keyboards? Do i have to configure anything with that remote control to be able to play and pause movies?
Thanks in advance

I don't know how things are going in SUSE, but I'm a Debian user, and I have a remote control sensor on my PC through my Tv tuner. As the latest debian kernel, and I'm guesing linux kernel in general as far as i know, it's at version 2.6.33-26 it automatically recognises my tv tuner and it's sensor as well. I don't even have to install LIRC or other programs, as i can allready change channels in TV time. Ofcourse not all the buttons of my Remote Control work but for me it's enough, as it covers the basic controls.

Sorry for double posting but for a working remote control try to install the latest firmwares and especially firmware non-free from your repositories

No, was simply recommending it for your intended purpose. Part of having a remote control is using software that expects remote control-like input, whereas a lot of software is expecting you to be using a keyboard and mouse and designed accordingly.

Effectively, yes.

No, not for any software that understands mce keyboard input. e.g. the Play/Pause button is the same as a play/pause button you would get on a media keyboard.

any standard IR universal remote i would imagine would work as long as you have an IR reciever attached to your serial or paralell port (or usb port)
then just make sure that LIRC or your windows multimedia software is programmed for the proper scan codes from the remote

I know this isn't what you asked but some of the newer laser mice work across rooms just fine. You can use them on glass top tables and I think there are some that are wireless in that they can be behind a common wall.

Thanks for your replies! Actually I think I should try to buy a remote control that gets recognized as a keyboard and mouse because it would be easier recognized and working with many different applications like vlc, kaffeine, amarok ...e.t.c.

Do you know if that remote control could be also used as a mouse to start and play youtube videos? I spend much time watching youtube videos so it would be nice to be able to control such things too.

Finally where should I start looking for remote controls that are recognized as keyboards and mice to buy one?

I would like to thank you in advance for your help

Yes. It has a toggle button that tells the receiver to switch between keyboard and mouse mode.

The link I gave you. I got one with an Asus motherboard and bought a further two from Hong Kong (free delivery) via eBay Buy It Now sellers.

Thanks but for some reason I have never bought anything and I do not want to buy something from e-bay. I do not trust it.

So if I got it right any remote control that is being characterized as MCE would be recognized as a mouse and keyboard from my linux. I want to use more the mouse functionality to be able to play and pause youtube movies.

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/136285.../Product.html#

Do you think that the above remote control will work?
Best Regards
