Linux on a Maxtor One Touch

Currently I have a 120GB hard drive with four NTFS partitions of about 30GB each. I am unable to run Linux and Windows on a multiboot configuration as GRUB or LILO do not seem to install properly (hence the 100% windows use), and whenever I boot up after I've installed both of the operating systems, all I'm given is the word GRUB in the top left hand corner of the screen. Is there anyone who knows how to get around this?
If not, can anyone tell me if I would be able to run Linux (SuSE 9.1 Pro) to boot from a Maxtor One Touch external (USB) hard drive (about 80GB)?

Thanks in advance,

Craig.

Did you installed windows on the first primary partition? Where did you installed grub?
Give us some details in order someone can help you
Ciao

I just wish to keep my NTFS partitions on my current hard drive. I was wondering if a Maxtor one touch external hard drive would allow a linux partition (or two) along with a boot partition for GRUB will allow me to multi boot to linux and windows.
