Linux memory hog?

ok... on my last box I had 256K and there was only about 4K free...ok well the box was old, I thought maybe I should just get a new box... 2.8Ghz hyperthreaded 800Mhz bus with 512mb should do the trick, right....???
So I check my mem again.... and:
free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 513688 370992 142696 0 24344 145436
-/+ buffers/cache: 201212 312476
Swap: 1092380 0 1092380

????
is this normal?
Its a new install and I dont have anything crazy running..but 370mb used? WTF?

that's normal. linux uses memory differently than you might be used to with windows. also notice that your swap file is still unused. check the forum for discussions of the same question.
