Linux Kernel Lockup on install with ASUS A7V133
 

Hello
I have tried Slackware 9.1 9.0, Mandrake 9.1, and the newest version of Red Hat that is freely download-able. I have not been able to get any distribution installed and running on this machine.

Every time I load the kernel off of the boot-able cdrom it locks up right after the serial port and real time clock.
IE have to do a hard reset keyboard is non responsive.

My hardware is as follows:
ASUS A7v133 with 1.33 Ghz Thunderbird BIOS is 1005A
Asylum Ge-force FX 5200
Maxi Sound Muse sound card
Gravis Eliminator Precision Pro Joystick
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI card
Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard
Logitech MX 300 optical mouse
512 megs of ram PC133 ram tested with DocMem and found no errors.
CPU is not overclocked.
Lite-on DVD rom drive (IDE)
La Cie CD Writer 16x10x40 (SCSI)
Primary Master drive is Windows 2000 57.25 GB
Primary Slave Drive is going to be all Linux 55.9 G
Secondary Master is Lite On DVD



All hard drives used are on the primary IDE controller not the Promise one.
I have disabled the Promise IDE Controller in the bios.
Nothing is plugged into the serial ports.
Nothing is plugged into the USB ports.

This system runs Windows 2000 without problems.

What parameters do I need to pass to the kernel to make this machine boot.
I have read and tried the following parameters but they did not help.
x86_serial_nr=1 mem=nopentium

Please advise! I miss not having a linux box around since my Pentium Pro system is unusable.

I would buy a new motherboard without a VIA chipset if I had the money.

I forgot to mention I do not have a floppy drive on the machine. I dont know if this would be a problem or not.

First thing I'd do is update the bios, latest version is 1009.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didnt think the newer bios would make that big of a difference but EVERYTHING works now. (INCLUDING SOUND and DHCP) on the first try with slackware 9.1.
