Linux installation issue
 

Hi all,

I have recently purchased a new machine with the following config:

1. ASUS P4P800 Deluxe motherboard with Intel P4 800 MHZ
2. Liteon (JLMS XJ - HD 166S) DVD ROM.
3. 2 x Seagate SATA 8m hard drives (ST3120026AS).
4. 1 GB Kingston RAM.
5. ATI 9200SE Radeon Video card.

I am trying to install Linux 9 on the system. I boot using the DVDROM. The Installation method prompts me ...

What kind of media contains the packages to be installed:
1. CDROM
2. HDD
et al

When I select CDROM and press Ok I get the following message:

The Redhat liunx 9 CD was not found in any of your CD ROMS. Please insert ....

Please help.

How are you boting the machine? Putting CD in DVD drawer and then starting up?

Assuming you can boot from the DVD drive (check your BIOS), RH9 should take you straight to an option screen which says essentially "press enter to install in graphical mode". If you're getting that far, your DVD drive works.

If you're booting from the DVD drive but the system can't find your disk after initially starting the install process, there may be something wrong with the CD itself.

Yes I can easily get through the options screen. I have tried using other boot commands viz.
linux hdx=cdrom

but after asking the language information it asks me the same options as I mentioned earlier and that's the end of it...

The CD is a dump of the ISO file from the redhat site.

I have a feeling it might be the CD, too. I'd atleast try burning the ISO again before worrying about other problems.

CD burning has come a LONG way since I got my first CD-R drive, but problems still come up! :)

You MIGHT even be better off grabbing the ISO again to make sure that nothing was corrupted during transmission (TCP/IP is damn good about error correction - but once again it's not unheard of to have those problems).

Better yet, go buy a boxed set and support RedHat. ;)

It very well might be a different problem, but before we delve into those I think it would be safest/best to get those potential issues out of the way.

This is probably the problem. It expect to see the CDs or else the individual isos on the harddrive but not all together on a dvd-rom. The easiest is probably to burn the individual isos onto CDs.

The CD's images were burnt on separate CD's...but hey problem solved..I goofed up during the burning process...thanks for the help guys.

However, I am having another new problem....loading the right SATA drivers for my Seagate drives. I will open a fresh thread.
