Linux home server on laptop/netbook

I am looking to build a home server for movie/music/picture storage and streaming media. I was wondering how well a laptop or netbook would work for this. I would like to play movies and music straight off the server on the desktop that I have hooked up to the living room tv as well as my personal laptop via wifi. Is this feasible? I am leaning toward installing Ubuntu 8.10 as the server OS.

Any input/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Installing a server environment for streaming media is really system-type agnostic, meaning it does not matter if it is on a desktop, laptop or netbook.

My suggestion, however, would be to set up the desktop you have hooked up to your TV as the server, though, and install Mythbuntu on it. Wrapping up a complete media centre is "easily" done with MythTV. I quote "easily", because from what I have heard, MythTV is a b*tch to set up.

You can always control it with a laptop/netbook, though.

Thanks I think I'll get started on that tonight. I think you're right about Mythbuntu... I just downloaded the installation manual. 134 pages! I already have Ubuntu 8.10 on that machine, so I'll just need to install the mythbuntu-desktop package from apt. Thanks for the input and information.
