Linux distro for Pentium166MHz, 64MB RAM and 4GB HDD

Will i be able to run/install a linux distro (bootable from CD or installed) on my old Pentium 166 MHz PC with 64MB of RAM and a 4GB hard disk? Can i run Gnome or Kde on it? I am new to Linux and i have recently purchased a book that has a DVD and a CD with linux distributions included. I want to test them on my PC and i really need some help. If anybody can answer these questions, i'm sure you guys can.

Thanks.

There is an almost identical thread running right now (10 yr old computer w/64 mb RAM). Here it is:

Just to add, you will not get a decent performance with KDE or GNOME. If that's not an issue, try.

I'd try Xubuntu with the Alternate Install CD for that system. XFCE is a lot leaner than Gnome or KDE.

Luck!

There are a ton of these light distros. Here's a recent LXer link to one

Xubuntu slow already

I tried on a similar setup with 256MB of Ram. It's still usable, but clearly on the slow side. You could try DSL (Damn Small Linux), it's fast except for the Firefox browser, but it is very primitive. It works as live CD too.

My favborite linux for "old" pc's is puppy linux. it's a brilliant linux. Very special.

Already installed Slackware 10.2. I've tried Ubuntu Breezy before for 3 weeks, can't get my ISA soundcard to work. I've tried DSL, and it's good. Also tried Knoppix, but it hangs (too slow) on KDE, works fine when I used fluxbox.

You could upgrade your processor for very little money. Depending on the board, it may accept a K6-2 or K6-3. I upgraded a P166 box here with a K6-2 450 processor from an online auction site after finding discussions about the motherboard via Google.

Hi,
Wondered if you were able to get Linux working on your old computer. I'm thinking doing the same to mine. What Linux distribution did you select?
