linux/bsd friendly mp3 players

I am after a mp3 player that works out-of-the box , ive heard ipods work with amarok and gtkpod, including generation 5. iaudio website mentions linux combatibility , although finding them in england is another story.
I ve read mixed reviews about iriver.

The HCL only seems to mention older models of mp3 players, no reference to what is on sale now.

The link above looks tempting for the price and with enough memory space, wheather it is compatible, it does not say.

Guess most of the players are Linux compatible as they simply mount as memory sticks!
Even my Sonyericsson W800 phone works out-of-the-box!

Ipod uses a special database to list the songs available to play, that has been reversed enginnered.

I am not sure if they all are simply usb storage devices, if thats what you are saying.

My nokia 6020 does not work with linux, all that gnokii can do is identify the model and the network thats running it.

I don't own a portable digital audio player (currently focused in saving for a new computer), however I guess that since Linux runs in the iPod both are synch capable/compatible. You can also try using iTunes with WINE, Amarok or Ephod. Sony products use strong DRM and I don't think it will be possible to use them with a non-Sony player. I suggest that you buy the product that you consider is best and make it work if it doesn't (it may be fun).

You're right that not all mp3 players are mass storage devices ;)

But most are.. so if I where you i'd just buy the player and give it a try..

I decided to order a iaudio m5 that supports mp3, ogg , flac and some other codecs
I found afterwards that rockbox on ipod can support those formats.
