An Os is supposed to work "out of the box"; easy man, easy!!

Worst yet, many "average users" start believing that there is something "wrong" with their "own" Computer System, which is not necessarily "true"!! Does one want to saddle those people with these "eternal doubts"??

I personally believe there is a big problem with the 2.6.20-x kernel. It was probably written or compiled on somebody's "fan dangled" laptop, ignoring the millions of "permutations and combinations" of computing devices and components out there; which really IS a serious challenge, and problem!!

To arrive at this conclusion:

1. I run four computers: One SATA system, and three PATA systems. The SATA system is the only one accepting 7.04
2. I have the three versions of ubuntu 7.04: "live cd", dvd, and "alternate cd". All of those have manifestations of the same problem
3. I tried the newly forged Linux Mint 3.0 "Cassandra", BETA. It uses the new 2.6.20-x kernel. It also hangs up, at the same point that (k)ubuntu 7.04 hangs up -> Linux Mint is 98% Ubuntu based
4. I used the newly forged Zenwalk, which also uses the new 2.6.20-x kernel. Zenwalk tries to "repair" one's own system. With the result that it converts my all "/hdx" system to "/sdx", screwing up everything else on the drives, or BIOS??!!

My opinion: Only Mr. Ubuntu, with the assistance of the Good Lord, can lead us out of our quandaries and miseries, into the "Promised Land". Really!! Because remember people, we are now on page 17 of this topic, with no real effective solution, yet!! A solution which satisfies everybody: Prince or Pauper, Husband or Wife!!

We have arrived at the point where there are people with Computer Systems, who "can", and there are people with Computer Systems who "can not"!!

Notes:
1. I have NO problems with (k)ubuntu 6.06 LTS and 6.10, and/or Linux Mint 2.2 "Bianca", (which is 98% ubuntu based). And Knoppix, as always, works fine everywhere!!
2. I have noticed that: When the older (k)ubuntus and Linux Mint 2.2 install themselves, the installer at one point halts, to announce it is "loading modules for the IDE Chipset", and there are about 5 or 6 of them!! Are those missing in the 2.6.20-x kernel??
while I agree it is a big problem, not everyone has the same problem. as I understand it, the "can't access tty:job control turned off" is the result of any error on boot - to find out what caused a particular system to hang you need to look at what occurs before the error. In my case the kernel has issues with my hard drive, "all_generic_ide" fixes it. other people have different problems, so different solutions are needed. Maybe they should have had the system print the real error before the generic TTY error.

Testing is done on plenty of different systems, however apparently some change made between one of the last beta releases and the final release caused problems for some testers. Other than the need to use all_generic_ide, Feisty has been more stable for me than Edgy - Edgy would occasionally refuse to start.

I built another computer for work which is very similar to mine, but only has one HD instead of two. So with only 2 drives connected (one SATA HD, one SATA DVD burner) it behaved the same as my system - no boot on the liveCD unless "all_generic_ide is used.

I don't understand your 'tty error' but is your BIOS set to boot from CD/DVD first? It's one that I over looked when I first started out. thought my DVD drive was on the fritz.
