Question Linux & LCD Monitors

I am new to Linux and am thinking about purchasing a flat screen (lcd) monitor for my Red Hat 9.0 / GeForce4 128mB system. Based on forum search results, it seems as though Linux has some difficulty with lcd monitors running though digital (dvi) output. The posts have been vague, however.

I am wondering if linux has difficulty running flat monitors though analog output? Does anyone (who wouldn't mind sharing their experience) own a flat monitor?

Thanks,

Elliott

Analog experience with FP

Hi new icewalker i'm aware of this problem

I just discover this site a few weeks ago installing SuSE 8.2 I'm definitely a newbie

But there is one problem i've resolved jumping from windows, the video output signals. I will just tell you what happened

So, no problem during the installation if i remember inly my DVI cable was linked, and then at the launch of XWindow nothing than a blank screen
OK I'm not sure, but it seems that the BIOS and the kernel don't detect the digital output, because there is small light at the back of my tower that don't switch on at the begining, even before the iso image enter in action

So i try the analog cable, and suddenly the light shine as my face )
As i know nothing about run level, i format again, and that time it works
Also don't worry about analog, it will works.
I think their driver is well done.

If you have information about digital output give it to me because i want to switch

Bye

I am running a Sony SDM-X202 Flat Panel using DVI on Red Hat 9 with an Nvida card/drivers and it works great! It is a little hokey to setup, but once it is, it is sweet!! Red Hat will not know any difference between the analog or digital I/O. That is handled by the video card. The only thing is that I had to setup the XFree86config file before starting the xserver. That just required me to read the manual for the monitor and get the dimensions (in mm) and the horizontal and vertical refresh rates and enter those in the config file.

I'm running a LG1710B LCD on Slackware9 & Radeon 9100 128Mb.
The analog output works correctly (Just setting manualy right parameters in XF86config file).

The digital output doesn't works 'cause the monitor, when X starts, goes on standby mode!!!!Any1 got suggestion??

If you properly connected the DVI cable to the monitor and video card, then check to see if there is an INPUT selector on the monitor. Usually analog is input 1 and DVI is input 2. Make sure the monitor is on input 2.

Well, i encounter the same problem, my montior enters the standbymode too
I think the problem is My DVI Output cannot be detected without nvidia driver on linux SuSE 8.2, but on Windows it works without constructor drivers perhaps win has some kind of pseudo semi half working driver

And Linux that is more efficient won't do that and prefer the customers to download the construcotr driver for nvidia

It's quite different!
My strange monitor effect is only when I start X!
If I use Linux in text mode the LCD@DVI works well!!
Only when I run the X server, without any errors, the monitor goes in standby mode....
So strange!!!

The luck you have, even on shell level my DVI doesn't work, if i switch the button to 2 that is DVI I/O, it just come back to light 1

What graphic card do you have already?

Is there someone on the forum who can help us...

Talking LCD Screens

I have just installed a JETWAY 1280x1024 LCD display - no problems at all through the analogue connector. The make does not feature in any of the screen lists but I simply selected 'generic display 1280x1024' and it worked immediately. I'm using Mandrake 9.1 but i don't expect that you will have any problems with other distros.
My recommendation - buy one!
