Linux and d965ryck intel
 

i am unable to install linux on new system having intel motherboard "d965ryck", when i boot from CD, system hangs. while using same Disk i can install it on my old P4, P3.

Using this scenario can any one tell me why i am able to insall Windows XP, 2000 as they are also old operating systems and a new "d965ryck" motherboard.

I am trying to install Fc6, xandros 4 desktop :(

Need a little clarification to determine if this is a hardware problem or software. Does every CD you boot to hang? Have you tried Live CD's?

This is the problem with linux. CDs are working, System is working on Windows (32/64 bit) both checked. Linux is installed from these disks on other systems. but unable to install it new system.

i think hardware (Motherboard) not supported. if i am right then why old version of windows (2000 pro) installs on it?

Well, Intel boards have been causing lots of trouble over the last montsh (but other boards as well, like ASUS). The real problem is SATA related: if you have SATA hard drives, linux fails to detect the cd/dvd drives. Technical story, let me just say that it has to do with the way that IDE is implemented in the new generation of motherboards.

Now for the workaround.FC 6 is getting on in age (it is at least six months old by now - as a rule that is an eternity in the linux world) and these issues have beenr resolved by more recent distros. The problem should be solved for Fedora 7 as well, which is now in its last beta stages and will be released officially within the next weeks. So there are three options in your case: get a more recent distro, wait for the official release of Fedora 7 or install the latest beta version (should be quite stable by now).

And if you wonder why windows 2k has not trouble installing? That's just a trick. You see, if you go into BIOS, I'm pretty sure you'llf find that you are running your hard drives in IDE mode (or if you aren't, you installed some SATA driver). win 2k doesn't have any problem with IDE drives but then neither does Linux. The crux is: AHCI mode is the native mode for SATA drives and rather then reverting to an outdated technology (IDE), LInux tends to override the setting in BIOS and use the disk as native SATA (rather than IDE) anyway. But considering that it was still struggling with the way that SATA is implemented on certain motherboards, this meant that it simply didn't work at all. As a test: put a PATA drive in your box and try again - Fedora will install without a problem.
