Linux and AMD processors

I'm new to Linux, and am about to install on an AMD 1800+ Athlon on a MSI KT4A-V mobo, plenty of RAM. Are there any problems or issues when installing or using Linux on AMD chips and compatible chipsets? I had been fooling around with Knoppix on a P3 machine as well as my AMD machines and I got some inconsistent performance. Maybe a fluke but just wanted to ask.

My mandrake system is an Athlon 1800 on an Asus mobo. No issues here.

i run core3 on the same mobo and a sempron 2500.only issue i see is no on-board audio....although i haven't bothered to look into it either.

I have only ever used Linux on AMD based machines and never had any problems.

I hv AMD 3000+ on RS480 Socket 939 , I am facing the problem with my on board sound card .. the error comes. --> "sound-0 slot-0 not found" , which is still not solved.

Hope u do no get the same error

My 2 cents - I'm running an Athlon 2500+ and have not encountered any issues whatsoever. I'd recommend AMD without hesitation -- J.W.

Is anyone using amd sepmron processors. I am building a new PC and I am thinking of getting a sempron 2800 or a budget athlon 64. Which do you think would be the better but cost effective option.

piscikeeper 04-22-2005 07:52 PM

cost effective is the 32 bit sempron.get it up and running then upgrade the processor at a later date.

reddazz 04-23-2005 02:55 AM

I was thinking along similar lines. I think I will just buy the sempron 2800.

I have AMD XP 2800+. I am wondering if I have to install "For x86-compatible (32-bit)" or "For x86_64 (64-bit AMD64, EM64T)". I would appreciate if any one could help me int this.

piscikeeper 05-01-2005 01:28 PM

the XP series are 32 bit socket a/462 processors.

pradeepmenon777 05-01-2005 09:26 PM

even i have experienced consistent powerful performance of linux on my athlon 2600+ . There are no erratic crashes and the system appears to be fully utilising the cpu power

it is a very good idea to upgrade from athlon to athlon64 . prefer socket 939 against 754 as the former is going to stay longer in market.
