i have a lexmark x1185 that i bought a year ago that i need to use with my PC since the HP printer that used to work went down yesterday. I've been hunting for a linux driver for the printer (i really dont care about the scanner, although that would be cool) and there seems to be none for a linux system. I dont remember correctly, but someone said i could install vmware, install the driver there and then somehow make cups use that so i can print. is there any truth to that? if so, any hints? otherwise, if there any other way?
any help, as always, will be greatly appreciated.

According to this post the CUPS lexmark z600 driver should get your printer going. I have a Lexmark z25 inkjet and the contortions required to get it to print (using the driver from the Lexmark website) no human should have to expereience.
