The CPU writes data to video memory, which is then scanned to create the video signal that goes to the monitor. The video driver (on the MB or in a video card) uses basic parameters like Horizontal and Vertical scan rate, bit depth, and the format in pixels. Beyond these basic parameters, it does not matter what is connected (as long as it supports what the video driver is putting out.)
