If i try to run ~/.BrightUp.sh I get the following:
line 6: syntax error near `('
line 6: `if [ $$((brightness > 0)) '=' 1 ]'

EDIT: Just had to remove the extra $ on line 6. Works fine now. Thank you for all the help everyone!

Sorry to bother everyone again. The issue is solved with the previous script, but for some reason the permission change to the /sys/.../brightness file reset after reboot. Any idea on how to make the change permanent so that I don't have to change each time I log in? Thanks!

I have that script set up under acpi. Use acpi -l, run tail -f on syslog, and you will see acpi events being logged. Use the Fn key combos and see if you get a brightness pair. BrightnessDown is of course the same except the math is different.

Use a udev rule: http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html
