Laptop speakers off when plug in headphones

Is there a way to turn in my built-in laptop speakers when i plug in headphones?

are you saying when you plug in your headphones the built in speakers go off, becuase i believe some do that on purpose. But having the specific model of your laptop would help.

Sorry for not being clearer.

I have a Dell Inspiron B120.

In Windows, when I plug in headphones, the built-in speakers turn off.

In Linux, the speakers do not turn off--but the headphones work all the same.

I would like to be able to listen to something in the headphones but not through the speakers.

the only thing I can think of is to go into volume control and mute the pc speaker.

didn't work....

in the volume control, there should be and option for pc speaker and pc speaker playback, try messing with those.

That should be a hardware switch, i.e. inserting the jack opens the circuit to the speakers and diverts current to the headphones. Are you inserting the jack fully?

This is a problem on many Dells. If you go to the Linux Laptops website and look at the guy's webpage who is installing Gentoo on a Dell Inspiron 1300, you will see he has the same problem. I'd post a link, but I haven't reached 5 posts yet, so I can't :) Anyway, he can't find a solution for it either, and neither can I. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

When I was using my onboard sound chip with kde I used the sound mixer "Switch" option and had an option to turn off/on "headphone jack sense" (or something like that) which alternatively muted/unmuted the built in speakers, maybe your sound mixer has the same thing for your particular sound setup.
