Unhappy Laptop monitor stops working

I have just installed "debian-40rs-amd64 dvd 1" on to an amd turion ferrari 4000 laptop.
used the laptop install option.
Everything went fine.
Except after all of the script loading. To the point where you are prompted for your username the screen goes blank.
System was running XP, so the monitor did work; don't know what the problem is.
If I shut the system off and reboot using an external monitor no problem.

It's aslmost as if once the gui comes up it no longer communicates with the monitor

The monitor drivers could be to blame.
Try the Alt-Ctrl-Backspace combination to stop X. Then try running "Xorg -configure" at the command prompt as root. You can also try manually editing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file's monitor section to set the correct values for the monitor.
