Bump, also it may be a temperature issue as I have nearly no problems when I wake up and the CPU is freezing cold, and it happens the most when the fan is running. At the moment it is not as I have no programs open except a VNC client.

Posting this via VNC on one of my servers since previously opening a web browser caused the fan to start running.

ok. On my hp dc7100 I have Mint 13 xfce or TinyCoreLinux. Mint make the fan running a lot. Same on my Dell optiplex where I installed Mint and moved to Debian testing lxde. So, I suggest you move to a distro with low graphic/CPU usage: Crunchbang (version of Debian FluxBox wbar), Debian lxde, TinyCoreLinux flwm, lubuntu.
The quickest install in my opinion would be debian lxde or lubuntu.

It's currently running Xubuntu; I thought Xfce was always lightweight. But how would using another distribution solve the problem with the processor/fan? If I opened a browser, it would start to run again. This has never happened in the past, the fan could run fine and there was no reboots or anything.
