laptop gets hot

I installed Red Hat Linux 9 on my Dell Latitute laptop. Everything is working fine, except that while running Linux, the machine gets hot quickly. There are 2 fans in the laptop. One is the primary fan that works undernormal conditions, while the secondary starts when the laptop becomes hotter. Under MS Windows the secondary fan scarcely runs, but under linux it keeps turning on frequently (and it should be bcoz the mainboard and HDD becomes hot). I am linux newbie and want to know whether this kind of problem is usual and how to solve it.
