Laptop external monitor starts dimming

I recently had the backlight on my laptop go out, so I've been forced to use an external CRT monitor. After about an hour or two the external monitor starts to dim until you eventually can't see anything. If you turn the external monitor off and let it sit a while everything goes back to normal until the process repeats itself.

The video card is an intel i915 mobile and I'm not using xinerama. I'm also not using X, just the console.

Is the external monitor going out or is it a problem with the laptop?

I'm not certain, but it sounds like the monitor may be overheating. Shutting it down to cool off allows you to use it again. How's the air circulation around the monitor? Is it enclosed or otherwise hampered vis a vis air circulation?

I never thought of overheating. Circulation shouldn't be too bad. The monitor is up against a corner with 6 inches between the wall and the monitor and the other side and top completely open. I'll check the temp next time the problem happens.

Thanks
