Laptop and extrenal monitor. How can I make it work properly?

Hi. I own a Compaq Evo n610c laptop and a Dell P991 CRT Monoitor, running Simply Mepis 3.4.2 rc2.

Often I connect my laptop to eksternal peripherals like a keybord, mouse and a montior.

The truble is that i am unable to use the original radeon drivers (gflrx) with my radeon 7500 graphics card, so I use the generic radeon drivers. The problem with that the resolution and refresh rates is all wrong, and it a real pain for the eyes. Can i make the Dell monitor work properly without using the gflrx drivers.

I noticed when I use the gflrx drivers whit the laptop monitor open the Dell monitor has the same settings as the laptop monitor, but when I close the lid the Dell monitor changes the settings, to what seems to be correct... But this dosent help me much when i cant get in to X with theese drivers...

Thanks for any help:-)

Though you cannot use the official ATI drivers, there are improvements in some of the generics/modded over those with the kernel and base packages. Which ones have you tried?

I have not tried any thing special... I did not know what to do. I installed kubuntu on may laptop and it works perfectly, so it's not a problem any more, but if any one know how to deal with it, I would like to know.

Thanks for the reply...
