Kubuntu 8.0.4+Sony Vaio DesktopTower Athlon1GHZ (fan is 24h on max speed)

i dont know how to control the fan speed
please help

how is it connected inside? is it connected directly to the PSU or the MB (Power Supply Unit) (Mother Board)

what do you mean by directly?
its the standard configuration and the powersuply is conected with a cable and the fan for the cpu is conected with a cable to. please define what you mean

i cant even use the energy saving functions from the CPU its running also 24h on max speed it never does throttle back

what i'm asking is, is the fan connected directly to your power supply or is it connected to your motherboard? if it is connected to your power supply without going through your mother board, then it wil run constantly, otherwise the bios will control it

i dont know that but i fo know that in windows xp i need to install a driver then the fan is running at lower speed and controlled and goes up with the speed only if the tempreture is rising

1. Is APM or ACPI turned on in the BIOS
2. Is the kernel loading the drivers for various bits:
lsmod | less
Look for 'thermal', 'fan', 'processor'.

Useful tools include:
acpi (dislpay info)
acpid (control power management)
acpitool (play with power settings)

We may be able to identify some of your controller chips and any special software needed if you post the output of:
lspci -v

beside that xsensonrs and ksensors is showing me the fan speed but i cant change the fan speed i tryed it as a root user but it seems not possible.

Did you check the BIOS to make sure ACPI is turned on?
