Kludge needed to work HP4000

I have been using this printer (using SuSE 9.1) for some months, but suddenly it does not do anything.
I have tried everything I can think of;
ppd file downloaded form LinuxPrinting.org
printed to file and tried to print to raw printer using lpr -P
In cups on localhost:631 switched the re-installed printer to use set paper tray and re-started CUPS
I have looked at the log file but its a mystery to me.

Any suggestions?

P.S just to taunt me the test page does print!...Is this a network problem?

Update (Replying to my own post)
The printer is a HP4000N and there is a Ghostscript file with SuSE 9.1
