Keyboard Problem - I have to press a key twice for certain keys

Hey there everyone. I have a rather unique and bizarre question for the linux gurus here. I have a wirless keyboard here (Microsoft wirless keyboard). In general it works perfectly fine except for two keys! The ~ key and the ¨ key all require me to press the button TWICE for them to show up on the screen.

What makes matters worse is that this bug only appears within X windows/KDE environment. In the raw console things appear to be fine. Any ideas on where to start to get this bug hammered out?

Another note I might add is that I think that a bizare keycode is being sent out on the first click of the ¨ or ~ button. I dont know how to view what it is. The general effect I have in most programs is that nothing will print out for the first time I hit a button (most likely because of keycode filtering or something) and then the second time it will show the correct character. But some programs like vim seem to be capturing a keycode that does not seem legit during the first time I hit the ~ or ¨ key.

I also have occasional repeating problems where a certain character will repeat AAAAAAa like so. I´m not sure if thats a real hardware problem thats related or maybe a signal is just getting messed up between my keyboard anddddddd wireless reciever.

Thanks all,

Daedius

This is a "Dead Keys" issue. You are probably using a different layout from the standard US layout.

Pressing ' and then e, for example, will produce an é and pressing ~ and a will produce an ã.

Check your keyboard and regional settings.

I'n now at work (on a Winblows workstation) and thus am unable to guide you directly to the setting, but when I'll get home I'll let you know.

Also note that pressing ' or ~ and then the spacebar, will produce the desired character directly.

wow, thanks r4zv4n, I thought I was losing my mind. What you said makes alot of sense now. Thanks for your help so far.

Well, at least if I dont get this fixed I can type in éśpáñóĺ easier. Look forward to hearing your advice on how to fix the Dead Keys issue. =)
