Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Keyboard driver rules files

The keyboard drivers have always been listed in the files

/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.xml
/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst

Now these files have been joined by the apparently identical

/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev.xml
/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev.lst

The new files don't seem to be used: at least, adding a new driver to the old ones works as it always did. Does anyone know why they're there?

evdev is the (relatively) new "generic input event" driver for X that supports all kinds of input devices. It's a completely different driver from the old keyboard and mouse drivers, so naturally it uses separate rules files.

evdev is much more flexible than the old drivers, and can more efficiently handle all the new multimedia keys that keyboards and mice have these days, as well as offering better support for things like hotplugging. If you used the new automatic configuration ability of X, chances are it would use the evdev driver.
