keyboard and mouse suddenly stop working

I have been having a rather strange problem with my SuSE 9.0 installation. I havn't booted it up for a while, because the machine was a dual-boot Win2k and SuSE workstation. Then the Win2k install stopped booting properly. It just freezes halfway through. So I try the SuSE install (which I don't use much because of network problems) and it will get all the way to the login screen, but I can't type anything in or click on anything or even move the mouse. The mouse and keyboard just plain don't work.

They work in the bootloader, so I'm assuming it's a driver problem but I don't exactly know what the problem could be, especially since they both failed at once. SuSE's Failsafe mode has the exact same problem, so it's nothing to do with X or KDE or anything.

I'm pretty sure I can mount the partition on a Knoppix image if I need to, but I'm not sure how I would fix it after I did that.

Please Help!

EDIT: Other details: Microsoft Natural Multimedia Keyboard and Microsoft USB Wireless mouse which I recently installed. I know the keyboard worked before though, so I'm not sure if adding the mouse could cause that.

if you have a usb keyboard, then you may have to enable special kernel options, otherwise, if you use a graphical manager to login it may well be improper XF86Config settings, I dont know what safe mode in suse implies though so Im not entirely sure

SuSE Failsafe means no HDD DMA, and no X.

It's a PS/2 keyboard, and I know it worked before now.
