kernel panic - unable to mount root fs

I'm trying to do a fresh install with an ASUS A7N8X-E motherboard and 2 Seagate SATA hard disks. No IDE disks.

I've tried several different live (Knoppix and Kanotix) and install disks and always get something like:

kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,2)

I just plugged the SATA hard disks in. Is there a setting in the BIOS or on the hard disks themselves that I need to adjust for SATA disks? (I don't want a RAID setup - just 2 separate hard disks.)

Other posts indicate this is a problem with RAM.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi,

I may be blowing hot air, yet I noticed on Asus' site that they mention an 'Adaptec 7901/7902 HostRAID Ultra320 SCSI Driver for Linux Red Hat 9.0' I just noticed that it not only mentions RAID it also mentions Ultra320.
