Kernel 2.6.10 on CV860A

I'm working on an embedded system using a CV860A mainboard (VIA C3 cpu / VT8601/VT82C686B chipset). The system runs fine on a stock 2.4.26 kernel installed by Slackware 10, but I'm trying to compile the new 2.6.10 kernel specifically for the hardware. I've compiled PIII/PIV kernels before and had no problems booting, but the kernel built with the VIA C3 as the processor type reboots as soon as you choose it in GRUB.

This may not, of course, be because of the cpu setting but something else the board needs in the kernel, but this happens immediately when I select the kernel in grub and hit enter.

Has anyone had a similar issue?

UPDATE - the boot problem was indeed a wrong cpu selection. I had selected VIA C3 Nehemiah but needed the above selection which was the standard VIA C3.

New problem - this is the 2nd time I've upgraded Slackware to a 2.6.x kernel and both times now Man is broken afterward. requesting a man page results in part of a page with an error at the bottom and nothing further

Final Update - Turns out the manpage problem is a carryover from around kernel 2.6.9. the udev rules have a bad line in them relating to pty and tty. The fix is here on LQ in another forum regarding man being broken on slackware
