KDE4 with KDE3 apps

Kubuntu 8.10 64 bit
KDE 4.2.1
All software kept current with daily notification.
Intel dual core 2.8 Ghz - 64 bit
nVidia GeForce2 MX/AGP/SSE2(400) - open GL driver 96.43.09

I recently switched from the onboard Intel graphics on my motherboard and installed an older nVidia graphics card. I'm trying to see if GIMP editing will speed up or do I have a motherboard issue. I used an older card (400 series) as my motherboard is AGP and only holds 2Gb memory. However, there have been several KDE4 and kernel uogrades lately so the problem could be there.

When I try to execute KDE3 applications - Digikam 0.9.4, KRename, Amarok 1.4, etc. the menus and warning windows are blank in any text boxes, scrolling boxes, or drop down lists. For example: I moved a sub-directory around in my PhotoAlbums directory and then opened Digikam 0.9.4. I get the splash screen OK and then the warning window about the missing directory appears, but the scrolling text box appears empty, I can't see the album name. If I have a list that exceeds the display area and I scroll it the text flashes for a second as the window rolls forward. Does anyone have any ideas? I am assuming this is not a common problem or there would be many messages about it I'm sure.

Is this an X-server issue or an nVidia issue?

TIA

I think this is a KDE issue.

KDE4 is very different from KDE3 and I think applications may have to be recompiled to run properly on KDE4.

I am not using KDE4 but it's available in my distro's repositories. I also notice things like:

konqueror
konqueror-kde4

In the list of available apps, so I'd guess konqueror-kde4 is konqueror rewritten and recompiled for KDE4.
