KDE says "An unknown error has occurred" when mounting usb stick with HAL

I have screwed about with this thing for ages, but no matter what I do, I can't get usb sticks to mount automatically in KDE using HAL/D-Bus. I am running a system D-Bus daemon and a user session daemon. The user daemon is started as a script from .kde/Autostart and reads as follows:

# Start the D-BUS session daemon
eval `dbus-launch`
export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

I have checked that both my own user and the dedicated users that HAL and D-Bus under are members of the usb and disk groups, and countless other things. When I plug the usb stick in however, it is recognised by KDE which brings up a notification, but it won't mount when I click to mount it and I get an error message saying "An unknown error has occurred" in front of an empty system:/media/sdb window.

Mayb someone can point me in the right direction as this is not so much an important thing as the last thing to make my distro just perfect. Many thanks,

Phillip

1 more thing

I forgot to mention there are various HAL processes/daemons running as well, all started at boot time. Many thanks,

Phillip
