Unhappy KDE - automounting devices as user

Hi,
I'm using Mepis 6.0, based on Ubuntu, with KDE 3.5.
When I plug a usb device or CD/DVD a window appears, asking me to open the device in new window or do nothing. A nice new icon appears on the desktop.

It works well within a root graphical session (used as less as possible) but not as a user. The window and the icon appear but it looks like a user can't mount anything. I can't expect my 10 years old daughter to type command lines when she plugs her mp3 player...

Does it have to do with /etc/fstab ? hal, udev ?
Thanks for any help and don't mind my English...
