K3b finds no drives

I have a cd drive and a dvd drive, and k3b is not finding either of them. Where should I start looking to figure out why? I tried to add them manually and it says it finds no device. I can mount cd's and dvd's fine though, so they are obviously working.

edit: if I run k3b as root, it finds them. So how would I beable to make it so all users can use k3b properly?

Debian has the cdrom group for this and the device needs to be part of this group for users to access them perhaps the same thing applies to slackware from the root seeing the drives I would say this is somewhere to start looking/searching the web for.
