Re: jumpdrives

As I understand it, a USB flash drive, IF you had it plugged in when you booted, should
automagically show up as a drive icon in Ubuntu.

If it doesn't show up, do you have usb-uhci and basic scsi support installed?
IIRC, usb flash drives require both, as they are typically represented to Linux as a SCSI drive.

You could also do a "dmesg | more" from a shell prompt to look at what ldid and did not
load successfully during bootup to see if the flash drive was recognized.

Suggest you find out that info. and get back to us with it for where to go from there.

Okay I tried to restart my computer with the jumpdrive in my comp and it still didnt detect it. Im not sure how to check if the usb-uhci and basic scsi support are installed, if you could let me know how to check that. Finally i used the "dmesg | more" command and got this

I'm no expert on this topic, but I just got my USB drive to work on Ubuntu 5.04, so I figured I would share what I can.

Your dmesg output looks like your USB device may have been recognized correctly:

Code:
usbcore: registered new driver usbfs

SCSI device sda: 492544 512-byte hdwr sectors (252 MB)

run the mount command from a shell, and you might see something like:

Code:
sbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw)
/dev/sda1 on /media/YourUSBHardwareInfo type vfat (r
You are running ubuntu 4.10 and I am running 5.04, so I don't know what differences there may be regarding USB configuration, but you might find something in the directory shown by the mount command.

You didn't mention what kind of USB jumpdrive you have. Unfortunately they do not all work exactly the same way. You might check the hardware compatibility list here or at http://qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdevcat.php?id=11 . There may be additional info on how to get your particular device to work.

Good luck!

usb jump drive in Ubuntu

Yep, he's right-the correct modules seem to be loading,

usb-core
usb-uhci
usb-storage --that's the one I couldn't remember

Notice the drive seems to be emulated as a scsi device, as I'd mentioned. (sda, rather than say, hda for an ide drive.)

Therefore, that command or similar should work, assuming the drive has already been formatted at the factory or by someone after it was bought with a DOS/Windows filesystem, such as FAT or VFAT.

Most drives come formatted with FAT, but if your drive hasn't been formatted, you may have to do that in Linux.

Let us know how you make out.

Actually I think that most USB drives come formatted with FAT32 rather than FAT (aka FAT16), which is the "highest common denominator" between Windoze and Linux. I ran into this recently when I purchased an Archos ARCDisk 20 GB drive because I have VMware virtual machine (VM) files that are very large. Some are 5 to 7 GB, so the 4GB USB drives wouldn't help there.

I was all happy to get the ARCDisk 20GB working and started to copy a 6 GB VM, when I got an error that there wasn't enough room!!! Darn, I forgot about the fact that FAT32 is limited to 4GB file!

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;314463

So now I have to chop up the files so they'll fit under the 4GB limit or reformat as NTFS, which will limit the portability. Argh! Of course, if you don't have to sneaker-net between Linux and other OSes, then I guess you can format the disk with whatever you like.

Cheers,

Question thread hijack?

Yep. Almost as on-topic as comments about thread hijacking.

Sorry if I offended you somehow newmoon. Didn't intend to. I thought the intent of these forums was to share helpful information. That's all I was trying to do. Forgive me if I don't know all the slick and subtle behavioral protocols that might be at play here, as I have not used this forum much.

Is there some kind of contest or something going on here that I accidently stepped into? If so, please advise and I'll steer clear. I'm not interested in competing with anyone.

post update: did some research and found out I was the dolt here. sorry.

If there is any contest going on here I'm unaware of it. This was a simple thread I started so that I could find out how to access my USB jumpdrive on my friends ubuntu box. Im glad everyone help me out and I'm sry I haven't responded to all your guys help. I ended up having to leave his house shortly after I posted this and have not yet been back. But as soon as I get a chance I will head back over there and I will test out your guys ideas and hope for the best.

By the way the jumpdrive is a PNY Attache 256MB jumpdrive if anyone know wether they are compatible with Ubuntu. And yes it did come formatted in FAT. Thanks for all your guys help and again sry it took so long to post back.

One person posted here at the LQ hardware compatibility list that had a jumpdrive like yours said that it worked:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/sh...=myprod&page=1

qbik.ch had post on the PNY Attache 256MB and unfortunately it was negative, but the unsupported status was unconfirmed:

Sorry about the "thread hijack" noise. Hadn't even heard the term before today, so I learned something new and I'll have to be more careful about being on topic. Thanks newmoon. (darn, there I go again, being off-topic; sorry)

Good luck with the jumpdrive.

Lol dont trip of it. I just started using Linux about 3 weeks ago. Well acctually I just heard of linux about 3 1/2 weeks ago so I think im about the newest person here when it comes to linux so anything that you post isn't off topic for me. I've spent the last 3 weeks just pooring over these forums reading all sorts of different post and answers. I'll check out the links tommorw it's late right now and I just got back from seeing Star Wars: Revenges of The Sith (I know its off topic but I don't care). My recomendation Go see it ASAP. Kick Ass Movie. Better than both of the first 2. Thanks for all your guys help

Didn't mean for you take it that seriously. A thread hijack isn't that big of a deal, so no I'm sorry.

I'm not interested in competing with anyone.

post update: did some research and found out I was the dolt here. sorry.
created a new thread on the topic:

newmoon,

Great, thanks, and I'm glad to hear that you are really one of the good guys. I think maybe it is a combination of me getting kind of hypersensitive to any kind of criticism due to lack of sleep and dealing with technology traps all day at work. Plus I was feeling sort of like I had farted loudly in church or something.

Still, it was educational, even if off-topic. I got a good laugh from the guy who posted an answer to my hypothetical question in the thread I created about thread hijacking (you know, like what I'm still doing here)
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...80#post1649680 and a couple of posts after.

Agreed, let's keep helping.

Cheers!
