Issues w/ SiS Si7012 Integrated Sound Issues
 

Hello to all reading this. I am a Windows die-hard, normally, trying to see what all this fuss over linux is about. I have tried in the past to install Redhat, but to no avail. Now everything is PnP friendly and colorful and the support seems to be kosher. I picked up a laptop from a local computer store and installed Ubuntu on it:

uname -r
2.6.17-11-generic

I have checked the device manager and everything seems to be fine. Media files play as though nothing were awry but sans noise. I have read countless posts concerning this and they all either: a. made absolutely no sense to me (and I am a MSCE) or b. did nothing to help my issue. everyone seems to post a bunch of outputs from terminal so I will not disappoint.

I have installed and messed around with the ALSA mixer for about an hour making sure the external amp was off and volume was not muted. Tried external speakers and no output was received. I've updated my AC'97 codecs and my SiS Drivers with no result. I really want to get this piece working but am about ready to give it up. I am starting to remember why I stopped messing with linux in the first place.

Use alsamixer. For more settings use alsamixer -V all. Some sound cards may need external amplifier unmuted or enabled for sound to work. Other sound cards uses external amplifier for line in or other inputs. Post the output of amixer.
