are the HorizSync / VertRefresh ranges correct?

there are surely better, more elegant ways to set up X, but when I have installed a new display or Xfree release, and a similar problem occurs, I "init 3", insert a set of Modelines, i have collected e.g.:

Modeline "1024x768" 65 1024 1032 1176 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync
Modeline "1024x768" 75 1024 1048 1184 1328 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync
Modeline "1024x768" 85 1024 1032 1152 1360 768 784 787 823
Modeline "1024x768" 85 1024 1048 1376 1400 768 771 780 806
Modeline "1024x768" 98.9 1024 1056 1216 1408 768 782 788 822 -HSync -VSync
Modeline "1024x768" 115.5 1024 1056 1248 1440 768 771 781 802 -HSync -VSync

and run startx - and, if it still does not work, view /var/log/XFree86.0.log (which I think makes great reading)

Thanks for bearing with me Arnold. Sorry to be such a newbie but this problem is driving me up the wall.

would I be ok in say replacing my current modeline "1024x480" etc with one of the above and trying it.

such as this one
Modeline "1024x768" 65 1024 1032 1176 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync

or by "insert a set of Modelines" do you mean added them all

I've tried adding the above section but its made no difference, the monitor display is still stuck at 640x480.

I'll have to come back to Linux when I buy a new video card by the looks of it.

I have finally resolved the problem with the video.

I tried to run the patch but that failed whilst making the patch. So I gave up on that.

In the end I spotted a post on the net about an 855patch written by the same guy who had done the one above. In that it mentioned that the fault was to do with the amount of memory that dell laptops assigned to the video only being 1mB. So I checked in the bios on my desktop machine and sure enough the video buffer was set to 1mB by default. The only other option was 8mB which it is now set to and its now running correctly. Without any patches

Thanks to all who helped.
